Ideal Trip Length
5–7 days, ideally split between two base towns so you can settle in rather than move constantly.
Best Time to Visit
Late May through June, and September. Avoid peak August when the coast is at its most crowded and hottest.
Why I recommend it
There is a particular kind of ease that settles over you on the Amalfi Coast — the kind that comes from lemon-scented air, pastel houses stacked into the cliffs, and water so clear it looks lit from below.
I love it for the rhythm more than the sights. Mornings begin with espresso and a slow walk down to the harbor; afternoons drift between a swim, a long lunch, and a nap in the shade. It's a place that teaches you to travel at the speed of the sea.
Best for
Couples seeking a romantic, unhurried escape; families who love being near water; and travelers who appreciate good food, beautiful light, and the quiet luxury of doing very little.
Signature experiences
- A private boat day to Capri and the Li Galli islands
- Lunch at a family-run clifftop restaurant in Praiano
- A limoncello tasting at a working lemon grove
- Sunset from the terraced gardens of Villa Rufolo in Ravello
- A coastal drive at golden hour between Positano and Amalfi
Food & culture
This is one of Italy's great kitchen regions — simple, seasonal, and deeply local.
Expect seafood pulled from the morning's catch, the famous colatura di alici (anchovy essence) from Cetara, and pasta dressed with little more than lemon, olive oil, and herbs. The lemons here are the size of footballs and flavor everything from granita to the after-dinner limoncello.
Dinners are long, unhurried, and almost always involve a view.
Where to stay
Clifftop boutique hotels with sea-view terraces in Positano or Praiano for the full Amalfi drama.
Quiet, garden-set stays in Ravello if you prefer cooler air and fewer crowds.
A private villa with a staff for families or groups who want to settle in for the week.
Sample trip ideas
- Amalfi & Capri: A slow week on the water with one day by boat to Capri
- Ravello Retreat: A cooler, quieter stay focused on gardens, music, and long lunches
- Coastal Family Villa: A private, staffed villa as a base for swimming and day trips
